There have been 45 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.

However the the latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) show there have been no new deaths reported.

There has now been a total of 1,763 COVID-19 related deaths here and 26,253 confirmed cases.

Of the cases today:

  • 35 are men/10 are women
  • 77% are under 45 years of age
  • 31 are associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case
  • Four cases have been identified as community transmission

33 cases are located in Kildare, seven in Dublin and five are spread across four other counties.

The HSE says it is working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread.

It comes as the Government is expected to announce that pubs won't re-open as planned on August 10th.

On his way into a Cabinet meeting earlier, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said the Government was going to be cautious.

"We had a meeting with the Acting Chief Medical Officer now, and we'll have a Cabinet meeting next and a decision will be made at Cabinet and we'll announce it afterwards.

Mr Varadkar said he did not want to preempt the decision, but added: "What I can say is it's unfortunate truth that this pandemic is still raging across the world, and even in Europe where it's under relative control.

"We have seen an increase in cases across Europe, including here in Ireland, so relative to other European countries we're still doing quite well and we want to keep it that way.

"And we want to make sure we do nothing that jeopardizes the opening of schools and colleges over the next couple of weeks.

"That's why, on the advice of NPHET, we'll be recommending to Cabinet that we take a very cautious approach for the next couple of weeks.

"I know that's going to come as a further blow to some of the sectors that have not been re-opened - but we just can't risk moving backwards to risk the schools re-opening".
