More than half of households targeted in a city council crackdown on illegal dumping have signed up to pay their waste charges.

Almost 580 homes in the north inner city were targeted in the campaign to stop rubbish being dumped.

An Irish Business Against Litter report listed the area as on of the most seriously littered places in the country.

The removal of illegally dumped bin bags cost the council 670 thousand euro last year.

Those who want to report illegal dumping can call the council's new confidential hotline on 1800 251 50 or online at fixyourstreet.ie.
