Almost half of the text we use on Instagram is emojis.

Figures released by the site show that the icons are slowly becoming a language of their own.

About every second word we type is an emoji, though Finland lead the way with emojis used in 60 per cent of text.

According to Instagram, it was the release of the iOS emoji keyboard in 2011 that started the surge in emoji use on the app.

The smiley face, which can be used to say things like "lol, lmao and ahahha," is the most widely used emoji on Instagram.

These symbols are also beginning to replace internet slang like OMG and xoxo.
