A carjacker, who crushed a young mother’s legs when he ploughed into her after losing control of a stolen Honda, has been jailed for five years.
Gareth Kenna of Whitechapel Avenue, Clonsilla had forced another woman out of her car when he approached her on a roundabout with a screwdriver.
In broad daylight on Oct 10th 2014, Gareth Kenna was chased out of Donabate Golf Club after trying to steal two cars, but he did manage to force a woman out of her car with a screwdriver at a nearby roundabout.
He drove the car at speed down the wrong side of nearby Hearse Road and smashed head-on into another woman’s car. Her 13-year-old son was in the back.
The car’s engine was pushed back onto her legs and it took emergency services over an hour to cut her out. She spent eight days in hospital and needed a wheelchair for several weeks.
Mr. Kenna was also hospitalised, where he remained in a coma for some time. He said he’d no memory of what happened when he eventually came to.
There was a smell of alcohol off him at the time of the carjacking, and the court heard he shouldn’t have been driving in the first place because of a 20 year disqualification handed down after picking up 14 convictions for dangerous driving.
Judge Martin Nolan jailed him for five years today.
