City Group Calls For Drugs To Be Decriminalised

People who use illegal drugs should not be criminalised according to the CityWide Drugs Crisis Campaign.

It's made a submission to the Citizens Assembly on drugs highlighting how almost 70% of drugs convictions relate to personal use.

The organisation says there is a clear link between poverty and drug use.

Co-coordinator of Citywide Drugs Crisis Campaign Joan Byrne says a drug conviction can follow you around for life.

She said ''Some of those cases will end up in prison and others will end up with a conviction on their record which will have massive impact on their future chances. It will impact on things like employment, accessing housing and travel. And that will follow a person for their whole life.''
