The Captain of one of the largest cruise ships to dock at Dublin Port has welcomed approval for an upgrade of the area.
The €230M redevelopment will include new berths and dredging the mouth of the Liffey to make it deeper.
At 330 metres long, the Britannia is one of the larger vessels to come into the city – something that wasn’t really possible until this year.
But with the redevelopment of the port given the green light, we’ll see more larger ships arriving in – bringing an economic boost to the city.
It wasn't the easiest maneuver for Captain Paul Brown to pull, he said "the only way she can come into the port is to swing outside the break water and then back five miles down the Liffey, and then finally to come alongside - so quite an interesting maneuver".
The face-lift, including dredging the mouth of the Liffey, will mean the port can handle biggest ships and cruise liners, which will benefit Dublin's economy.
Work on the Port area is expected to start later this year and will take 5 years to complete.
