The cabinet has approved proposals which will see calories being printed on menus.
The law will mean restaurants and take-aways will have to display a calorie count alongside their prices.
The idea is being put forward to deal with obesity and to allow people to make healthier choices.
But restaurants say it will be bad for business and will add to their costs.
