There's been a huge drop in the number of residential burglaries.

New figures from the gardai show they fell by 50 per cent from Winter 2015 to Winter 2019.

Under Operation Thor home burglaries decreased from over 12 thousand to almost 6000 over these four years.

The Winter Phase runs from the start of October until the end of March each year.

The year on year reduction is almost 10% from 6,613 residential burglaries during Winter 2018 to just under 6,000 during Winter 2019.

International evidence shows a surge in burglaries of about 20% is likely to happen in the winter months when daylight hours are at the lowest level.

As part of the plan by the force, it carries out targeted enforcement and preventative activity, to stop potential burglars from exploiting reduced hours of daylight.

Assistant Commissioner, Special Crime Operations, John O’Driscoll, says "the positive conclusion to the Winter Phase of Operation Thor is encouraging and we will refocus and build on that success in Operation Thor, during the summer months. We are particularly aware of the vulnerability of older victims and are determined to apprehend those who exploit their vulnerability.”
