Bad body odour and refusing to take a guide dog were among the reasons people complained about taxi drivers last year.

The number of complaints made to the National Transport Authority doubled last year and is continuing to rise.

Figures obtained by the Irish Independent show that there were 742 complaints were made in 2013, twice as many as the 377 complaints received in 2012.

For the most part complaints received related to driver conduct or fares while any of the more serious issues were referred to Gardai.

However, some of the complaints related to hygiene - in a number of cases passengers said they were overwhelmed by the stench of a driver's clothing and body odour 30 seconds after getting in.
