ThereÂ’s been a 66% increase in people sleeping rough in Dublin City Centre in the first half of this year.

During a survey carried out on September 3rd, the Simon Community found 85 people sleeping rough in an area between Jervis Street, Amiens Street and Harcourt Street, the highest number since the counts were started.

The Simon Community says its services for the homeless are being stretched more than ever, with demand at crisis levels.

The organisation is launching its annual report this morning, which says the GovernmentÂ’s plan to end long term homelessness by 2016 is in serious jeopardy.
