Reckless cyclists who break red lights are expected to face on the spot fines.
The new regulations are to be introduced in a crackdown on road safety.
At present if gardai spot a cyclist breaking the rules of the road they can take their name and address and the person may have to appear before the district court.
Now lycra louts may be hit with on the spot fines of at least €50 for breaking a red light as well as other offences, rather than going to court.
It's claimed cyclists are particularly bad at luas junctions.
The new rules are expected to be rolled out by the end of the summer.
It's hoped the move will result in some cyclists exercising better road behaviour.
