An army corporal who was caught with almost €10,000 worth of cannabis, has avoided a jail sentence.
Damien Flood of Scribblestown Avenue, Finglas, claimed the cannabis was for use by his wife, who was dying from cancer.
On March 15th 2013, the 40 year old father of two was stopped by the gardai in Rathfarnham for erratic driving.
€9,800 worth of cannabis was seized from the boot of Damian Flood’s car.
The army corporal explained that he was returning the drugs because he couldn't afford to pay for such a large amount.
He also told the court that his wife was dying from cancer and he’d read online that cannabis would help relieve her pain, if he mixed it into her food.
A prison sentence would have brought an end to Flood's career in the army.
However, in light of what she described as the “unusual circumstances and the service he’s already done for the country”, Judge Mary Ellen Ring decided to make a probation order instead.
