After 13 years at the helm in Germany, Angela Merkel has announced that she is to stand down at the end of her term.

The 64 year-old, who's held the role since 2005, says she won't run in the 2021 election.

She's also leaving her post as leader of her conservative party, the Christian Democrats, in December - after 18 years.

Mrs. Merkel told a news source in Germany:

"As chancellor and leader of the CDU, I'm politically responsible for everything, for successes and for failures."

"When people are telling us what they think of how the government was formed and what they think of our work during the first seven months of this parliament, then it is a clear signal that things can't carry on as they are."

"The time has come to open a new chapter."
