A new report shows 23 percent of Irish households are jobless, above the European average of 11 percent.

The research from the National Economic and Social Council shows the number of homes across the country where no-one is working or has limited access to work.

Jobless households include people who are unemployed, ill or disabled, working in the home and students.

The Government has reacted to the report, saying it is not 'acceptable' that nearly one quarter of Irish households are jobless.

Senior Policy Analyst with the National Economic and Social Council, Helen Johnston, says these homes pose a high risk of poverty.
