Almost 1,500 motorists were caught speeding over the bank holiday weekend.

An Garda Síochána’s road safety partners GoSafe monitored over 300,000 vehicles throughout the country.

1495 drivers were detected for speeding over the August Bank Holiday weekend and will be issued with fixed penalty notices.

The highest speed detected was on the M8 in Kilworth, Co Cork, which saw a driver speeding at 188km/h in a 120km/h zone.

Meanwhile a high-visibility road safety campaign by Gardai over the bank holiday saw over 325 drivers tested for drugs and alcohol in Louth.

About 30 checkpoints were set up and seven arrests were made - six for drink or drug driving and one disqualified driver.
