The age limit for Irish people seeking an Australian working visa will increase by five years to 35 years of age.

The move was announced by Tánaiste Simon Coveney, in order to "promote cultural exchange and strengthen people-to-people links."

Last year, 8653 visas were issued to Irish citizens under the programme.

The changes comes into effect on Thursday.

The Tánaiste said: "This extension of the eligible age not only allows a more diverse group of people to avail of this scheme, but also helps to strengthen those links between our two countries even further."

Australian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Patrick O’Donovan stated that the agreement, which also allows Australians to come to work in Ireland, gives participants the ability to work abroad for up to two years.
