Eight million cigarettes have been seized at Dublin Port.

The haul worth €4m was found when officers searched a Latvian truck arriving from The Netherlands.

Revenue says the cigarettes were "elaborately" hidden between glazing in window frames.

Retailers Against Smuggling are welcoming the seizure and paying tribute to Customs Officers who made the discovery.

However spokesperson Benny Gilsenan believes 8 million cigarettes is just the tip of the iceberg, in terms of what gets through.

The group is renewing calls for tougher penalties for those convicted of smuggling.

Truckers can be hit with fines of €10k, but R.A.S says that's just a fraction of what smuggled cigarettes cost the exchequer.
