Just over 8 thousand cars were stolen in Ireland last year.
It's estimated that there are around a dozen crimes gangs involved in the thefts across the country.
It's prompted gardai to set up a number of covert operations targeting car theft rings.
Two in every five stolen vehicles are never recovered.
It's believed that the cars are shipped to the UK, Eastern Europe and Africa or stripped down for parts.
