People's lives could be put at risk due to a shortage of fire fighters in Dublin.

SIPTU spokesman Gerry Harris is saying that fire fighters are under increasing pressure:

"Dublin fire brigade is not fit for purpose at present due to serious understaffing of crews. We have fire fighters now working 8, 9, 10 days out of every 10 or 11. That is going to expose the public to increased risk, and the fire fighters themselves to increased risk."

The union says that 70 new officers are needed straight away in order to deliver a safe service.

Dublin City Council has promised more fire fighters, but is changing the recruitment process.

However, Gerry Harris says not enough staff will be hired under the new competition.

SIPTU members have voted for industrial action in a row over the recruitment of new firefighters.

The SIPTU strike committee is due to meet shortly to decide the next steps.
