An investigation is underway at Cloverhill Prison after three officers were hospitalised after a violent inmate lashed out.

It’s understood one of the guards needed surgery after he was beaten with the handle of a brush.

The prisoner in question was allegedly involved in a fight with another inmate earlier this month that led to one of two intervening officers being hospitalised. The other suffered facial injuries while trying to break it up.

Yesterday evening, he was sent back to his cell after becoming aggressive towards a member of staff. He’s alleged to have returned with a broken broom handle and it apparently took three guards to subdue him, all of whom received injuries that required hospitalisation and it’s understood one of them needed to have surgery on his arm today.

The Irish Prison Service says it’s aware of the incident and the prisoner will be brought before a full disciplinary hearing.
