It cost over €1M to run a freephone number to help the homeless last year.

The number is used by rough sleepers to access emergency accommodation.

The Dublin Region Homeless Executive operates the line which received almost 62,000 calls last year.

Homeless callers are on hold for around 10 minutes with 250 people placed in emergency accommodation each night.

Now figures released by the council show the that phone line cost over €1M to run in 2015 - €668,000 of that was spent on the phone bill.

Some councillors say that the line does not represent value for money and that it could be spent on housing or rent.
