The home of one of the 1916 leaders in Dublin has been demolished this morning.

Earlier this month, councillors voted to protect the O'Rahilly house at 40 Herbert Park in Ballsbridge as a listed building.

However developers demolished the building at dawn to make way for a luxury apartment and hotel development.

Michael Joseph O’Rahilly lived at the house with his wife and children before he was killed during the Easter Rising.

Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillors Daniel Céitinn and Mícheál Mac Donncha have described the news as "a shameful act of corporate vandalism against our history and heritage."

They went on to say; "This is not the end of the matter. We will demand that legal action be taken against the developer by the Council and that this house be restored."
