A Dublin Fire Brigade log book which recorded the names and addresses of people hurt in the 1916 Easter Rising has been bought by city council.

It was on sale as part of an auction of historical memorabilia earlier this month and was bought for €3,800.

The book will go on display at the Dublin City Library and Archive on Pearse Street on Monday and will also go online later that week.

While the names of soldiers and civilians hurt are in the book, the names of the rising volunteers are not as Archivist Dr. Mary Clarke explains.

“Pearse actually had his own plans. There was a cohort of nurses in every garrison and his initial plan was that City Hall would become the actual hospital of the 1916 rising under Dr. Kathleen Lynn. So they had made their own provision for their own wounded and therefore they don’t feature in the log book.”

Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke says it’s history as it unfolded.

"It’s going to be emotional for some relatives that are alive and their great, great grandchildren. And some of the fire personnel that were working on that day, their relatives and sons and daughters and great, great grandchildren are now attached to Dublin Fire Brigade. So it’s really in the making, today is a terrific day for the city of Dublin.”
