An expelled student has been charged with murdering pupils at his old school in the U.S.

At least 17 are dead after the massacre at Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland which is north of Miami.

Police say the gunman deliberately set off fire alarms so people would leave their classes.

19-year-old Nikolas Cruz has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder - following yesterday's school shooting in Florida.

Local sheriff Scott Israel says 12 people were killed inside the school while the others died outside.

According to the Miami Herald, Nikolas Cruz had been expelled and was banned from returning to the campus while carrying a backpack.
