It looks like WhatsApp users are an update closer to being able to make free calls.

In its latest update, a phone symbol has appeared at the top right-hand side of the screen.

It doesn't allow users to make a call through WhatsApp, but it does link them to their phone's contact book.

It's understood the company is getting ready to roll out a phone service, alongside its messaging service - similar to Viber.

The calls aren't expected to cost anything when made over WIFI, or for people whose networks offer them unlimited data.

The Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) feature has been rumored for a while, but there's still no official confirmation from the company.

Last year, WhatsApp users were upset when it introduced two blue ticks which show people when their messages have been read - even if 'Last Seen' is turned off.
