Gardaí have launched an investigation into a fire at a vacant nursing home in Brittas on Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called at around 7am to the site at Crooksling.

More than seven units were at the scene at its height.

Dublin Fire Brigade sought assistance from Wicklow Fire Service, who sent two water tankers.

Firefighters reported difficulty in getting water onto the fire, and had to draw water from a local resevoir.

Traffic restrictions were in place for a time on the N81 as hoses had to be layed on part of the road.

Rumours had previously circulated that it was earmarked for accommodating asylum seekers.

Although, it is not yet known what actually caused the blaze.

The Department of Integration says Gardaí are investigating the incident.

Its also condemned any violence or intimidation towards International Protection Applicants.

It added that such acts put people's lives and homes in danger.

Meanwhile, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says there is never any justification for violence, arson or vandalism in our Republic, after a garda investigation was launched into the incident.

He added it's deeply ironic that some of those who try to link migration with crime engage in serious criminal activity themselves.
