Dublin's New Lord Mayor Commits To Making Streets Safer For Women

Improving safety for women on Dublin's streets is a priority for the new Lord Mayor of the city.

Councillor Alison Gilliland made the comments after she was elected to the position last night.

The Labour Party representative is taking over from Hazel Chu and will fill the role for the next year.

Cllr Gilliland used her first night in the new role to highlight a key issue.

"I don't think women and girls feel safe in our city at night."

"I know myself if I'm walking alone that I'm tense - it's the not knowing," she said.

The incoming Mayor said the council must be more conscious of the issue when planning changes to the capital's streets.
