Well, his "people" did.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably seen the viral video of comedian Joe Lycett calling out David Beckham for being an ambassador for the World Cup in Qatar.

Joe Lycett called out David Beckham, strongly regarded as a gay icon for being the first straight man to appear on the cover of Attitude, for taking the deal when the country has such strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

The comedian threatened to shred £10,000 of his own money if the footballer didn't withdraw, and after a week of silence from David's camp, Joe appeared to shred a big pile of cash in a video shared on his Instagram

However not long after, Joe revealed the cash had been fake and the money had actually been donated to a number of LGBTQ+ charities.

In the last week or so, Joe revealed that the team behind David Beckham had been in touch and last night on the show Joe Lycett's Got Your Back, we finally heard David Beckham's response to the whole kerfuffle.

The statement was read out on the show:

"David has been involved in a number of World Cups and other major international tournaments both as a player and an ambassador and he’s always believed that sport has the power to be a force for good in the world.

"Football, the most popular sport globally, has a genuine ability to bring people together and make a real contribution to communities.

"We understand that there are different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East but see it as positive that debate about the key issues has been stimulated directly by the first World Cup being held in the region.

"We hope that these conversations will lead to greater understanding and empathy towards all people and that progress will be achieved."

Joe said he could not give his opinion due to legal reasons, yikes!

Unfortunately that could be the last we hear of this story, but we'll stay tuned 👀
