A letter calling for a national monument to be erected in memory of Savita Halappanavar has been handed to Dublin's Lord Mayor.

Savita, who was a dentist working in Galway, died from sepsis in 2012 after her request for an abortion was denied for legal reasons.

Earlier, a group which includes several activists gathered at the Mansion House.

Ruth Coppinger from Rosa, who was among the signatories, says Savita needs to be remembered.

Coppinger said: "We just handed a letter here to the Lord Mayor requesting a permanent memorial to Savita to remember her life and tragic death.

"But also, the impact that it had on social change in Ireland and women's rights, and to say 'never again.'"
