Pele has died at the age of 82.

The Brazilian football legend had been receiving care in a Soa Paulo hospital since late November.

Just before Christmas it emerged that he was being treated for cardiac and renal dysfunction, having been battling colon cancer since September 2021.

Widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest ever footballers, Pele was named Edson Arantes do Nascimento when he was born.

He began playing for Santos at the age of 15 and the Brazilian national team a year later.

He burst onto the world scene as a 17-year-old in the 1958 World Cup and went on to win the trophy three times - in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

He remains the only player to have won the tournament three times.

He died at 3.27pm Sao Paulo time (18:37pm Irish time) due to multiple organ failure resulting from his colon cancer, the hospital said in a statement.

His daughter Kely Nascimento paid tribute to her father on Instagram: "Everything we are, is thanks to you.”

“We love you infinitely. Rest in peace."
