The AA says fuel prices have dropped by around 20 cent at many petrol stations in the last 24 hours after the government cut excise duty on petrol and diesel.

It's also advising drivers they can save as much as 40% on fuel costs by reducing their speed.

The AA says prices are starting to come down - its head of communications, Paddy Comyn, has visited 15 petrol stations across the country this morning.

Based on a survey at those forecourts nationwide, many are selling petrol for around €1.80 a litre and diesel for less than €2.

It's also advising drivers they could save as much as 40 per cent on fuel by reducing their speed, especially on motorways.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan's suggestion of doing that drew a mixed reaction - but party senator Pauline O'Reilly says there's no suggestion it'll be mandatory, saying no one in government is suggesting that speed limits should be reduced to cut fuel costs.

One expert - Dr Paul Deane from UCC - believes the government should reduce speed limits to help keep fuel costs down.
