Britain's ambassador to Ireland says a state visit by President Higgins shows how important Ireland is to the British government.

It's been confirmed that President Higgins will make a state visit to the UK next year, the first ever state visit by an Irish president.

It comes just three years after Queen Elizabeth's historic visit to Ireland.

British ambassador Dominick Chilcott says it's highly unusual for one visit to come so soon after the other:
