A controversial plan to build accommodation for the travelling community in Mount Merrion is up for debate again.

Locals have been opposing the plan for close to 30 years - but the County Council now wants to push ahead.

The proposed site on Mount Anville Road in Mount Merrion, looks out onto Dublin Bay and is situated in one of the wealthiest areas in Dublin.

It's one of 11 identified by the council, including others at Rathfarnham, Kiltiernan, and Stillorgan - which will now be debated as part of a public-consultation process by Dun Laoghaoire Rathdown County Council..

There's been local opposition to the Mount Anville plan dating back to 1985, and the occupation of the site as a council depo has also prevented any movement  - but it's development now looks closer than ever.

However local opposition remains - and a local Fine Gael councillor is also objecting, arguing that selling off of the premium site would generate enough money to build a greater number of sites elsewhere.
