A former CIE bus driver is appealing the sentence handed down to him after he was caught soliciting undercover Gardai to act as drug mules.

Sunny Idah, with a former address at Lipton Court in Temple Bar, was jailed for 13 years after being found guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

98FM's Frank Greaney reports:

Sunny IdahÂ’s arrest followed an international operation involving Gardai and Swiss police.  He was secretly recorded offering two undercover officers €5k each to travel to Brazil, swallow a kilo of cocaine pellets and bring them back to Ireland.  It happened in 2010 on dates between September 14th and 19th.

Before sentencing him to 13 years behind bars, Judge Desmond Hogan described him as a person who was higher up the chain of command than a simple courier.

Idah, who has both Nigerian and Irish nationality, has spent just over three years behind bars for the crime.  But his lawyers will today put forward their arguments against his conviction and sentence.  The matter is due to be heard before the Court of Criminal Appeal later today.
