There's been a 13% rise in road deaths recorded in 2022, according to new figures from the RSA.

13 people lost their lives on the roads and streets of Dublin last year, the joint record highest number of fatalities by county.

A total of 155 people died in 149 fatal road collisions nationwide, an increase of 18 deaths compared with 2021.

The number of pedestrians has also doubled in the past year, with 41 people losing their lives on foot.

Chief Executive of the Road Safety Authority said a key priority of his is to encourage drivers to travel at safe speeds.

"A recent RSA observational survey found that 77% of drivers were driving in excess of the posted speed limit of 50kmh. Urging drivers to slow down on 80km/h and 100km/h rural roads will also be an important area for the RSA next year given the fact that 69% of fatal crashes happened on these roads in 2022.”

The figures also show 1,292 people were also seriously injured on our roads last year.
