Love Me Tender opened at The Bord Gais Energy Theatre on Monday night and we went along to see the first show.
Set around a small American town in the 1950's, this musical is inspired by and features the songs of Elvis Presley.
While it's packed with the best songs from the King, it doesn't feel like it's written for the music. Each song is perfectly knitted into the overall storyline.
Sometimes there are references made to songs in the most hilarious way. For instance, each time it's mentioned that the main character is wearing blue suede shoes he says "but don't you step on them", which got a giggle from the audience.
The acting was superb and the singing would give you goosebumps. It features Shaun Williamson, best known for playing Barry Evans in EastEnders, and singer and 'What Not To Wear' host Mica Paris.
It's hilarious at times and overall a very feel-good uplifting musical. The opening show received a standing ovation at The Bord Gais and the cast even invited the audience to a sing song.
Regardless of whether or not you are an Elvis fan, or like his music, this musical is absolutely brilliant and a must see.
It runs in The Bord Gais Energy Theatre until Saturday 26th September.
