Over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend organisers of Dublin’s LGBTQ Pride announced the theme of this year’s festival. REBEL REBEL has been picked for the 2016 festival, which will see thousands of people coming to Dublin’s city centre from June 22nd to 26th to celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community.
The REBEL REBEL theme gives a nod towards the 1916 Centenary, while also highlighting Glam Rock legend David Bowie, who released a song of the same title.
Jed Dowling, Festival Director for Dublin LGBTQ Pride, commented: ‘As we reflect on years gone by in Dublin and Ireland, we recognise many stories, movements, occasions and people, that have allowed us to reach the level of freedom that our LGBTQ community has today. REBEL REBEL allows us to look back and reflect upon what it means to be Irish and LGBTQ. We have a lot to celebrate and we want to see everyone’s rebellious side this June!’
The highlight of the festival is the Dublin Pride Parade which takes place on the 25th of June. The parade will start at the Garden of Remembrance, and then winds through the streets of Dublin up to Merrion Square, where the main stage hosts performances and speeches.
