The US Embassy have issued a security alert to American citizens for this weekend's Longitude festival.

However, gardaí say they do not comment on 'statements made by third parties'.

The festival got underway in Marlay Park earlier, and will continue until Sunday.

However, the US Embassy here today issued an alert for American citizens.

The warning was echoed by the US Department of State on Twitter:

On their website, the Embassy claimed: "Reports indicate a potential for violence at the Longitude Festival taking place from July 5-7, 2019, in Marlay Park, Dublin.

"Local police are aware of the threat and will conduct comprehensive bag and person searches. The police have increased event security and are monitoring the situation."

They urged US citizens here to avoid Marlay Park and surrounding areas, and to 'exercise caution'.

They also advised people to 'keep a low profile' and notify friend and family of their safety.

A Garda spokesperson said they don't comment on third party statements.

They added: "Longitude Festival 2019 is taking place this weekend at Marley Park in Dublin, the festival is being policed appropriately following normal security risk assessment.

"A full and comprehensive policing plan is available on the Garda website www.garda.ie and on all Garda Social Media sites Facebook, Twitter and Instagram."

The force also noted that no incidents have been reported so far.
