“Not only do Donegal want to dictate to us where we play our football matches, they want to dictate to us how we play.”
Those are the words of Dublin legend Charlie Redmond following Dublin’s Super 8’s opening win against Donegal in Croke Park yesterday evening.

Dublin came away 2-15 to 0-16 points winners over Donegal in a rather slow burning game which saw the boys in blue lack their usual attacking flair and killer instinct which they have become so associated with. Two goals from Niall Scully proved the difference in the game which for the last 15 minutes saw Dublin retain possession in the middle of the park much to the frustration of the Donegal faithful. Charlie had his say on the game.
“Dublin came out in the second half and energized the game put a bit of pace into it and created a gap between them and Donegal.”
“Donegal just didn’t push on and what I thought the funniest bit of all was when the Donegal crowd start booing the Dublin team because they were retaining possession.”
“Donegal with all 15 players within 45 yards of their own goal, it struck me they’re booing our team. Not only do Donegal want to dictate to us where we play out football matches, they want to dictate to us how we play.”
Following that opening day win for Dublin next they travel to Omagh to face a Tyrone team who have also won their opening game against Roscommon. A tough, physical test awaits Jim Gavin’s men who are spearheaded by the very experienced Mickey Harte. Charlie gave his expectations for the game.
“It’s a small ground in comparison to what Dublin are used to playing in, there’s no doubt the Tyrone county board will make it even smaller. The pitch won’t be much bigger than a snooker table by the time they finish with it.”
“I saw Tyrone against a toothless Roscommon team, they’re 8 points up and everyone of the Tyrone players was inside their 50-yard line. If they’re 8 points up and playing like this what are they gonna be like if they’re 4 points down?”
“Next week is gonna be a mother and father of a tactical match between Jim Gavin and Mickey Harte, I don’t think it’ll be a game we’re reshowing.”
