Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery is back in football management, signing a deal with Villarreal for the next three seasons.

Emery, who was very successful with Sevilla, is back in the dugout in his native Spain having been sacked by the North London club last November.

When he was shown the door at Arsenal, the club had gone seven games without a win, their worst run since 1992.

Villarreal finished fifth in La Liga and will play Europa League football next season.

In a previous role with Valencia between 2008 and 2012, Emery guided them to three third-place finishes in the Spanish top flight.

This was followed by a brief spell in charge of Spartak Moscow before his managerial career took off with Sevilla.

Emery managed Sevilla to three Europa League titles in succession from 2014 to 2016. They beat Liverpool 3-1 in the 2016 final.

That gave him the chance to manage Paris Saint Germain, where he won a French League title, but success in the Champions League proved elusive.

A year ago, Emery brought Arsenal to the Europa League decider. They missed out on Champions League qualification by losing to Chelsea in Baku and could only end up fifth in the Premier League, losing a prominent position.
