Smithers will come out as gay in the new season of The Simpsons. Mr Burns's assistant will embark on a journey of self acceptance which will be covered across two episodes.
Producer Al Jean says Smithers will get fed up with Burns not appreciating him and will consider his options. He said: 'In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t. We deal with that in two episodes. We actually do a lot with Smithers this year; he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.'
Season 27 premiered in the US last night.
