Guest Lead Announced For Line Of Duty Season 6

Kelly Macdonald will star as guest lead in Line Of Duty season 6.

BBC One announced the news on their social channels this morning.

The Trainspotting star will play Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Davidson in the next season of the show, which is due to start filming next year.

Davidson is the the senior investigating officer of an unsolved murder, "whose unconventional conduct raises suspicions at AC-12".

Series leads Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar are also confirmed to return.

Compston and McClure - who play Steve Arnott and Kate Fleming - tweeted their delight at the news.

Meanwhile, series writer and showrunner Jed Mercurio wrote:

"Everyone involved in #LineofDuty is thrilled Kelly Macdonald is joining us for Series 6, playing AC-12’s most enigmatic adversary yet." 

Last week, Jed tweeted a snap with the season 6 team at dinner "nervously awaiting the arrival of secret guest stars".

Series 5 of the police corruption drama aired from March 31st until May 5th this year.

Line of Duty's fifth season finale drew in over 9 million viewers.
