Fourteen children and one teacher have been killed in a shooting at a primary school in Texas, the state governor has said.

The attack happened on Tuesday at Robb Elementary School in the city of Uvalde.

The school has an enrollment of just under 600 students.

Governor Greg Abbott said the shooter was an 18-year-old man who lived in the city and entered the school with a handgun.

Uvalde Memorial Hospital said on Facebook it had received 13 children via ambulance or buses for treatment.

Three of the children were being transferred to other hospitals, a statement added.

The suspected shooter was taken into custody, the Uvalde Police Department said.

No further details were provided.

A heavy police presence surrounded the school Tuesday afternoon, with officers in heavy vests diverting traffic and FBI agents coming and going from the building.
