Zach Johnson has won The Open Championship at St Andrews following a 3 way play-off victory against Australian Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa.

Winning the famous Claret Jug brings to an end an eight year wait for the American since winning his last and only other major title, the 2007 Masters at Augusta.

It was a final round that promised so much for Irish golf fans but in the end delivered very little after Padraig Harrington finished his round with a double-bogey and a bogey to post a 3-over par 75 that left him on 7-under par.

Overnight leader Paul Dunne slumped to a disastrous 78 that saw him finish on 6-under but the Greystones amatuer and he admits condition made life hard for him
