The father of the Republic of Ireland U17 player at the centre of the penalty shootout controversy says his son endured a sleepless night.
Jimmy Corcoran was shown a yellow card during the European Championship quarter-final against the Netherlands for time wasting.
The game finished 1-1 and the sides were level in the penalty shoot-out at 4-4. The referee then brandished a second yellow.
The ref punished the young keeper for coming off his line early to save Dutch spot-kick before ordering the penalty to be retaken.
Noel Corcoran spoke exclusively to 98FM's Dublin Talks with Adrian Kennedy: “We were outraged with the way he treated a very young player.“It was obvious the consequences of what was after happening, this was a 16-year-old, obviously he was my son but for any child to have to go through that I thought was very harsh.
“He slept a little bit but he’s not feeling a whole lot better but time will fix that. This is football and that’s why we play sport; for the ups and downs.
“It still is the moment of his career so far but just for the wrong reasons unfortunately.”
When asked how Corcoran was doing the morning after the night before, Corcoran said:
“He slept a little bit but not a lot better, time will fix that hopefully. That’s why we all play sport for all the ups and downs.”
