A sublime performance from Wayne Rooney earned Manchester United a well deserved opening Champions League victory by 4-2 over Bayer Leverkusen at Old Trafford.

Wazza netted twice and set up a brilliant fourth for Antonio Valencia after the move of the match saw Rooney split the Germans defence with an inch perfect pass bent with the outside of his right boot.

In between Robin van Persie supplied an individual moment of brilliance with a backwards volleyed finish.

Leverkusen had equalised to make it 1-1 and also netted the last goal of the match.
Also in the group Shakhtar Donetsk went to Real Sociedad and won 2-0.

Manchester City were in clinical mode as they hammered Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in the Czech Republic.

During a ten minute spell early in the second half City hit the back of the net three times through Edin Dzeko, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero.

Bayern Munich share top spot in the group after a 3-0 win at home to CSKA Moscow.
Elsewhere Real Madrid didnÂ’t break sweat as they won 6-1 at Galatasaray with Cristiano Ronaldo bagging a hattrick and Copenhagen drew 1-1 at home to Juventus for whom Fabio Quagliarella scored.
And Paris St Germain won 4-1 at Olympiakos with Benfica getting the better of Anderlecht by two goals to nil.
