Australia have changed their selection policy ahead of this year's World Cup.
Up until now, only home-based players have been selected for the Wallabies.
But coach Michael Cheika will now be able to pick players who play abroad, as long as they have at least 60 caps and have played for seven years in Super Rugby with an Australian team.
It means Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell could now feature in the World Cup.
The move comes in with immediate effect.
"This is a pivotal moment for rugby in Australia, where for the first time in its professional history, the ARU will allow overseas-based players who have made a significant contribution to Australian Rugby to become eligible for the Wallabies," said Australian Rugby Union chief Bill Pulver.
"It's a decision that recognises the changing dynamics of a global rugby market for professional players.
"Combined with our other recruitment and retention strategies, we feel this decision allows the ARU to assert more influence over player movement and contracting in Australia and abroad."
