Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement for the 18-month loan of Gedson Fernandes from Benfica with an option to make the transfer permanent.

In the absence of Harry Kane for the foreseeable future, the signing will be a fillip for Spurs fans. Fernandes will don the number 30 shirt for the remainder of this season.

Fernandes is a graduate of the Benfica academy, Gedson Fernandes made his first-team debut last season and was named the Primeira Liga's Best Young Player of the Month for August. He went on to finish the season as a league champion, making 22 appearances as Benfica secured their 37th Primeira Liga title. In total, he has made 53 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese club, scoring three times.

International

On the international stage, he has made more than 50 appearances for Portugal. Gedson Fernandes has represented his country at every age group from Under-15 upwards, including winning two caps for the senior team. He was also a member of the Portugal side that won the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2016.

Gedson Fernandes becomes the first signing at Spurs under the Jose Mourinho regime. The first chance Tottenham fans may get to see the new signing is the early kick-off on Saturday.

Tottenham travel to in-form Watford, who have not tasted defeat in any competition since losing to Liverpool in the middle of December. Mourinho's men are searching for a first Premier League win in four games.
