Spain and Barcelona legend Xavi has tested positive for the coronavirus, his club Al-Sadd has confirmed.

The 40-year-old, who recently signed a contract extension to remain as manager of the Qatari club, received the news ahead of their match against Al-Khor later.

The World Cup and European Championships winner was not showing any symptoms of the virus and he'll now self-isolate for two weeks.

“Today I won’t be able to join my team on their comeback to the official competition,” Xavi announced via the club's social media accounts.

“A few days ago, following the Qatar Stars League protocol, I tested positive in the last COVID-19 test.

"David Prats will be there on my behalf as head of the technical staff - coach to the Al-Sadd reserves.

"When the health services allow it, I will be very eager to return to my daily routine and to work."

The Qatar Stars League has resumed this weekend with five games left in the pandemic-delayed campaign.
