As expected Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery to win the FIFA Ballon d'Or.

It's the second time the Portuguese captain has collected the top world player gong.

Ronaldo last won the award in 2008 and prevented Messi from winning it for the fifth time in a row.

The Real Madrid attacker accepted the award at a ceremony in Zurich tonight and failed to hold back the tears.

The award is voted for by national team captains, coaches and selected soccer correspondents from around the world.

Irish skipper Robbie Keane gave Ronaldo his top vote followed by Messi and Gareth Bale.

Martin O'Neill voted for the same top three as Keane but had Messi as his top choice and Ronaldo second.

Jupp Heynckes won the FIFA Coach of the Year award after guiding Bayern Munich to an unprecedented treble in 2013.

The FIFPro World XI was named as follows;

Manuel Neuer in goal.

Dani Alves, Tiago Silva, Sergio Ramos and Philippe Lahm at the back.

Andres Iniesta and Xavi joined the three nominees for the big one in midfield.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was named up front.
